08 Hard at Work

New Updates for ART FARTING!

First off, I'll now post up my submitted Gothology entry, "Exchange". It was submitted a few days after the deadline, March 15th (and thankfully, made it through), but it turns out at least one or two other contributor was later than I was, so I'm not so bad. Enjoy if possible- the concept is pretty much a last minute idea scrapped together because I had no time to make my two more elaborate idea(s) [Swine's (the first idea) concept art was posted 2 entries back] nor jump into the experimentation with the 3rd short idea I had in mind, which is the concept of paced horror. I was kind of a late joiner for the anthology and eventually gave in to their demands for more artists. Doesn't matter though, at least i got something done and opted for publishing. This is a simple and short story of an unfortunate demon hunter's encounter of a demon during his break in the bar and it was never meant to go beyond that realm.

Feel free to critique. I haven't really shown a lot of people this, but the feedback I have gotten so far seems pretty positive. The finalized entry was tightened up and had some of the brightness inconsistencies fixed as well as some of the text re-written for neatness and legibility, so this is the not-fixed version that I submitted to show people before submitting to the anthology.

Here is some Battle stuff from
Robert vs Andrew, called off enterVOID Trophy match. It's fucking insane how much work and thinking I've done for this battle and yet I couldn't really reach any sort of closure, so eventually it's led me to frustration and bouts of self-doubting with both my art and storyline (as signified in my previous blog. Now that I've settled down since, I can elaborate on these shortcomings better here), and with life piling on top of that, eventually lead to a cancellation with a solid promise to re-start it up whenever school is out. I really wanted to do my best and take out all the stops for this fight and jump up a couple of steps from my last one and FINISH it, considering how awesome Spaceninja must be by now.

These are the compiled thumbs, incomplete even, signified by the red/orange X marked boxes. for the fight.. (Top two rows only. The bottom row was excised thumbs) they were eventually thrown out because the entire flow of the story wasn't really good. Theoretically it would have been 20 pages, maybe gone over 20, if all those blanks had been filled in. I still had to revise a couple of thumbs from there and add to it. I'll be working on an entirely new batch for the revised fight.

This is a loose concept art of the antagonists of the story. They are a new gang of thugs who simply assault for material gain - named Tornado Alley with the group's powers based on weather-related disasters.
Mad^Max is a cocky, ill-tempered electricity user but also adept with guns and is the long-range fighter; his stigma is lightning storms.
Flea is generally subtle but keeps the gang in check, is an unrealistically powerful jumper and the impact of his weight crushes people and causes trembling of the ground; his stigma is earthquakes.
Rocket, a wolf-shark hybrid, is the well-rounded fighter who packs a decent combo of power and speed and is an amazing swimmer.
He is also the aggressive and determined leader of the gang, unexpectedly ; his stigma is the tornado debris that hits people.

First attempt of the battle.. which I gave up on as soon as I arrived at page 4 because (based off the thumbs shown above) the amount of pages for this version was too time consuming considering how late in the deadline time frame I started on this. I didn't like how it was coming out aesthetically because it didn't really signify much improvement from my last fight- plus it presented inconsistency issues, lack of unity, and the same old loose background style that wasn't as solidly rendered as the characters.
See the other two pages here:
PAGE TWO
PAGE THREE

Second attempt of the battle was started shortly after tossing aside the first rendition, went for something entirely speedpainted and kept stabbing at it, but I later discovered I was easily worn out by this style and preferred to limit it. I even drew a new set of thumbs for this, which would have shortened the entire comic to 10-ish pages and not around 20. However, I also didn't like how it looked aesthetically because everything was too loose and had to be tightened as nicely as the one panel with Andrew's face in it. It's a little step up from the previous version but this part will also will probably be given up on and started over, save a couple of panels will be recycled.

And some MISCELLANEOUS studies for the fight after cancellation if you feel like looking through my extra crap.
Test of faux-inking. Liked how solid it was, but disliked some of its stiffness. This technique of faux-ink is a little trick devised by Lysol to utilize the solidity of 'pencil inking' layed over colored pencil sketch. It's even more solid than me using an actual pen, surprisingly. Jazz was just put into there for the hell of it. This 'inking' style is better used for reference sheet-type things and promo/pin-up type crap.
Character Expression studies. Just practicing to compare demeanor and personality.
Ridiculous hype. Still might use it for SOMETHING because of how blatantly amazing (read: homo) it is.
New Coloring/Ink Test #1. Done after I canceled the battle. Combined with faux-inking style. Looks nice, but extremely time consuming.

New Coloring/Ink Test #2. Also done after cancellation. Simpler coloring style + faux ink. Significantly less time consuming, but the colors were not as detailed as i would like.
New Coloring/Ink Test #3. Airbrush overlay values coloring style + semi-solid pencils. Not very time consuming AT ALL, can tighten further and make this a legit and decent looking color style.

Now for just art crud I did after the cancellation. Most of this is kind of preparation in between homeworking and harsh testing for the same battle coming up, so many of these pieces were experimental or just for fun to get my mind off of the story and focus on the art.

Dyle the Crocodile is a plausible VOID fighter. His purpose is to represent a more mundane type flow and wavelength to his stories since both Robert and Adonis tend to lean to the awkward extremes with their fast-paced stories. He doesn't really talk much, and is primarily a saxophone musician with odd jobs. He is cold-blooded partners with Mr. Upa, the Axolotl. His sense of morals are basically good but he's a seriously dangerous powerhouse if you press the wrong buttons. He personally dislikes anthros who give a bad name to "furries" and does his best to try to redeem their general reputation in a passive sense by acting civilized even under the status of discrimination.

SONIC FANARTING. I know I know. The faux-inks came out great for this piece so i thought i'd try to color it.

Piece i did to channel depression after cancellation. Thought it was a bit meaningful of something since Robert is probably never seen like this. I inked this in the down-time at night, and I colored it the next day when I was feeling better. Very paradoxical in terms of visualization because saturnine type crud is meant to be dull and desaturated, but I liked the end-result.

Adonis piece, because someone pointed out I don't draw him as often (well he's dead, so that makes sense to some extent) as I do Rob. He's drowning and I've always wanted to attempt the limpness of a posture suspended in the gravity-defiance properties of water. Experimentation with a new speed-painting style. Hurray for Autumn schemes!

Further experimentation with the new speedpainting overlay-values style + texture, using Mr. Upa, the trumpeteer, and Dyle, the saxophonist. It came out great, though colors got overwhelming in some cases.

HYPE for the battle I made after figuring out the coloring+inking style I think I wanted to use for the fight. Both the inks and colors process flowed ridiculously well for me, and wasn't as time consuming as it looks so I'll do only a little further experimentation with it. A couple of issues are here, but I dunno if I feel like fixing it, so I'll just keep it in mind for the future instead.

THAT IS ALL FOR NOW.

06 OVERDUE UPDATE

OH SHIT!!!

Life's been busy so I forgot about this blogspot and neglected it. Wow I suck!

I added an audio module. GIVES IT SOME AMBIANCE.

heres a crapload of recent artsies. No particular order, just approximations.

These are two banners I made for the recent enterVOID contest due March 1st, held by Mr GALVO, the proclaimed Creative Machina of VOID. It was the James vs Black banner that eventually won out for me, due to it's immense popularity (the legendary battle itself, and maybe the sheer energy exploited within the image!) but I'm proud of both of them either way. The second one took much longer due to personal experimentation with detail, depth, and desaturated palette.

Several Concept Arts I whipped up for an upcoming fight! Everything 'cept the added colors were done traditionally. You should expect it up around March 16th. I CAN'T WAIT. Andrew is Spaceninja's, Rob is mine, Jazz is PuzzleThing's, who are the MAIN FIGHTERS PARTAKING IN THIS 3 WAY BATTLE! (Guest appearences are Marcelo who is Ari's, and Chia Hui who is Carlito's.)

Collaboration with the Wolfboy Jack (or otherwise known as Jack Jersey) who was telling me about his new character, Kevin Cute, a walking oxymoron of a character with some split persona and cumulative reputation problem. Happened to be inking this while talking to me, and he brought up the possibility of working together as a ink-colorist tag team with the new tag features going to be used in enterVOID. As I couldn't really fall asleep that night, I just spent time coloring this and making it look AWESOME. Very fun exercise.

Contribution for the Realism Jam that was started by VOID's beloved communications moderator, Angieness.
The funkiest thing is, I started this portrait before the realism jam started, and I did pass off a WIP shot to Sobii (AKA AVT) while she was still working on the Nova banner. I can't help but wonder if I kinda of indirectly influenced the start of the jam because Angie said her influence for beginning it was AVT.

Fanart for Qyzex's Nemutsai Tenshi, who died at the hands of Jetamie's Uchu Senshi Kirin. Experiments with B+W tone here.. my anatomy got a little off but I do like the overall effect portrayed here. I got a pretty cool fanart of Rob in return xD.

My oversized robot cataclysm page from my last battle. Rob basically cuts a hole in the cockpit floor and starts ricocheting around the insides of the robot, parkour style, with the blades he generated from his bracelets to cut through the metallic armor. This is probably the only page I genuinely enjoyed doing, and it shows, because it's the one page that people tended to get really impressed by even if the rest of the battle may have not been up to par with the incompletion status. Everything else was kinda miserable and painful, (asides from the half assed last page, which was fun to do for obvious reasons) dragging my feet through, making me think I should do my next VOID fight in speedpaint.

Studies for Character speedpaints, which tend to lack in comparison to my environmental speedpaints because they take way longer and end up turning into fully rendered digital paintings. Trying to concentrate the focus of the detail where it matters (Which I've listed on the image itself as notes) Each character shot took roughly 10-30 min each. Also trying a somewhat dulled palette that leans towards a certain colored ambience for effect and mood. This is a plausible style for my next fight. I may have to refine certain aspects more.

Scrapped idea for the banner contest because the dimensions I measured were off. This could possibly turn into an actual forum banner though. Done in trad black and blue ballpoint pen inks, and blue highlighter.

SWINE : Scrapped Gothology idea - concept sketches

Concept Art 1 - Prop and Object design
Steamcopter, Camera, Vehicle Liscence were the objects of focus. The story took place in an industrialized dystopia, so I had to make it look the part with some steampunk influence.

Concept Art 2 - Character Design
The 3 main characters are shown here. They are all brothers of relation. To the right with the triple shoulder riding, Hector is at the bottom, the lover of sleep and the eldest bro. Travis is the center, the lover of food and the middle aged bro. Vincent is at top, the lover of hard work and the youngest of the three.

Concept Art 3 - Character Design 2

More studies, such as height comparisons and body stature. The antagonist, Mr. W, is shown to the bottom left.

Concept Art 4 - Scene Concept 1

A few BG studies for a specific scene in the story.

Concept Art 5 - Scene Concept 2

Studies for the police station. Mr. W is the chief of police and owns a wolf mask. Police uniform is shown, scale is debatable.

WOW THAT WAS A SHITLOAD OF STUFF.

05 dundundun

summer's approaching.. school has finals and shit.. there is so much to do, that out of this stress, I made a comic for practice to regain motivation, even though I was supposed to be working on ANOTHER bigger COMIC, against Jack's Henriksen on enterVOID.

I'll just leave it HERE. its pretty short, quirky, unepic and unserious.

03 so tired

Another update..

Round 2 of SDT wrapped up so now its votin' week..

I FAILED THIS SPEED DEATH COMIC SO BADLY ITS NOT FUNNY, HAHAH. I HATE BEING BUSY AND SICK.

Basically, what happened was -- I had no time during the weekdays when the battle kicked off -- Last week I had a crapload of schoolwork, then broke a fingernail on my right hand after falling into a wall with a nail onnit...then got stomachaches, then a headache.. then I had to get alot of sleep just to recover in time..... and that's when I got my 3 -4 days to work on the comic. Friday to Monday.

I know for a fact that I spent a good amount of time on the first 4 pages.. but the rest aren't as good. That's all. Even the plot gets incoherent towards the end because of loose and indecisive planning, so STORYLINE cannot save my ass for poorer quality. I think I was close to wanting to give up or kill myself, but I made it. hurray. I SKIMPED.

But yeah. Zsabre is a really tough opponent, so, if I falter just a bit, he could dominate the living shit out of me in a battle. >8|. Z's most likely gonna kill me for me when voting periods over.

then I'll BAWWWW for a little bit and give Adonis a proper burial. WOOHOO!!

THAT IS.. until VOID'S SRT. maybe? hah!

I liked the battle though. So awesome.

I dig just about most the SDT entrants and battles, though alot of long time VOIDers keep claiming they weren't as good as 2006 years or whatever. but I wasn't around then, so I can't say anything.

I might do one for the Justice SDT battle.. or just throw her in that same painting there, because I'm tired. WOOP WOOP.

Air over and ouuut.

02 stuff

I fail at -

Anatomy
Ink Lineart
Cars

If I rock at those things, ever, in the future, I think I'd be a way better artist than I am now. I mean like, seriously better, not just any ol' ordinary better. They're just the prime things that are probably making me fail really badly in my stuff. But I'm probably being too hard on myself.

Just gotta keep practicing with those ink pens/brush pens... and I gotta hit an art supply store sometime.. I really want to experiment with traditional color (watercolor/color pencil/marker) and extreme pencil detail. (.03 mm lead pencils, woosh!)

--------------

In the meantime, I'm going to continue to write up my coloring walkthrough guide that I'm gonna release on enterVOID forums and deviantART. I've decided it's going to be in 3 parts, since I can imagine myself saying tons and tons of crap about colors.. there's alot to them.

So, just to give you guys a breakdown,

part 1 will cover

1. Color wheel; The fundamentals
2. How to choose your colors; Contrast, brightness, balance
3. Shading and Lighting

part 2 will cover

1. Coloring with your lineart
2. Painting a background
3. Digital watercolor on pencil

part 3 is optional, and will cover special effects/extra ambient crap

1. Fire
2. Water
3. Electric/Energy
4. ?? more maybe ??

By no means will I be passing all of this as the 'correct' way to color. it's just colors from my understanding that will help other people out if I share some of my knowledge of how I do things. If anyone has comments/concerns/questions. please post and I'll get back to you on that!

----------------------------

ENTERVOID'S SDT TOURNEY. ROUND 2. AHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Thats is all for VOID.

---------------------------

Only managed to make one new pic today. its a creature/character concept I made for a collaborative comic project with a couple of friends. Her name is Siren, and by myth, the species is called a Lusca - a rather direct hybrid of a Shark and a Squid. She's had a harpoon impale her dorsal fin and probably a couple of rough fights with some ships.
